Volume 3 • Issue 1 • 1000e104 J Aller Ther ISSN:2155-6121 JAT an open access journal Each unique microenvironment of the human body is colonized by indigenous flora generally believed to be present within a complex biofilm. The symbiosis that describes the relationship between endogenous flora and the host is not a static situation but a dynamic milieu capable of continuous change. As the microenvironment changes, the relative number and distribution of individual organisms change [1]. Everything from cigarette smoke [2] to the development of an oral cancer [3] have been shown to alter the composition of the indigenous flora on head and neck mucosa. Most relationships between organisms or between the host and the organism in the head and neck are either not known, poorly understood or both. At the heart of the problem is that we do not know the organisms present, much less the complex interrelationships between the microbes and their interactions with host defenses that lead to infection.

Ability of intestinal Escherichia coli to survive within mesenteric lymph nodes.

Identification of mesenteric lymph node (MLN) bacteria showed that indigenous streptomycin-sensitive Escherichia coli could be recovered from MLN at least 48 h after this organism had been essentially eliminated from the cecal flora by antibiotics and replaced with exogenous streptomycin-sensitive E. coli JK. Additional experiments with antibiotic-treated rats also showed that indigenous strept...

Indigenous nasopharyngeal, auditory canal, and middle ear bacterial flora of gerbils: animal model for otitis media.

The indigenous microbial flora of the middle ear cavity of Mongolian gerbils, Meriones unguiculatus, was isolated, characterized, and identified, showing it to be sparse and transitory. Organisms, when found in the middle ear cavity, were most likely to be Staphylococcus epidermidis-like organisms. Cerumen from the external auditory canal of these animals yielded mostly staphylococci, corynefor...

The origin of periodontal infections.

P diseases are recognized as bacterial infections, and some forms are associated with specific organisms, such as Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans in juvenile periodontitis, and Bacteroides gingivalis and others in adult periodontitis. The source of the periodontal organisms, whether they are part of the indigenous or resident flora and overgrow to become opportunistic oral pathogens, or wh...

Role of anaerobic flora in the translocation of aerobic and facultatively anaerobic intestinal bacteria.

It is thought that the normal enteric microflora acts not only to prevent intestinal colonization but also to prevent subsequent systemic dissemination of ingested, potentially pathogenic bacteria. To determine the relative roles of specific components of the intestinal bacterial flora in bacterial translocation out of the gut, mice were given various antimicrobial agents to selectively elimina...

Relation of the indigenous flora of the small intestine of the rat to post-irradiation bacteremia.

There is general agreement that bacteremia occurs as one sequel to midlethal doses of whole body x-irradiation (Warren and Whipple, 1923; Mottram and Kingsbury, 1924; Chrom, 1935; Lawrence and Tennant, 1937; Bennett et al., 1949; Miller et al., 1951 Gonshery et al., 1953). This infection could occur as a terminal event in animals dying of radiation injury; however, the findings of Miller et al....
